E-mail Print PDF
Kate Dashper is presenting a paper entitled “The role of sport in policing the boundaries of acceptable sex and gender” at the forthcoming Political Studies Association Sport and Politics Group Annual. Through a consideration of reactions within the sporting community to the questions raised about the sex/gender of South African athlete Caster Semanya, her paper considers the ways in which many of the practices of modern sport that are framed as issues of fairness work to police the boundaries of gender, sex and sexuality within sport and beyond.

Work developing  ISO 20121 (using BS8901 as a starting document) has started.  More than eleven countries, including the UK, attended the first meeting. An important part of the ISO development process is to build a strong mirror committee made up of industry and academic representatives.  This mirror committee provides input and receive updates on the ISO process. UKCEM launches a new course designed to support local industry by equipping current and potential employees with the skills required to make the most out of festivals and events in the region. Beginning in February, the Certificate in Creating & Managing Events will cover all aspects of events management including innovative event marketing, risk assessments, personal license training and creative production. The course will be delivered in six two-day intensive workshops. A discount of up to 60% will be offered to Yorkshire-based companies.  The launch of the new course follows the announcement by Yorkshire Forward that events in Leeds attract more than four million delegates each year, with a collective spend of £562m.  Glenn Bowdin, Head of the UK Centre for Events Management, commented:  “With more than four million delegates visiting Leeds annually, as well as the thousands of festival attendees, we are sure that more individuals and organisations could be capitalising on the sector. We hope our new Certificate in Creating & Managing Events will help to enhance the competitiveness of businesses in the region and strengthen our events economy even further.”  For further details please contact Lisa Holt This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. E-mail Print PDF

The Arts Council are funding Leila Jancovich from the Centre and Professor Franco Bianchini, from the Cultural Planning and Policy Unit in the School of Cultural Studies, to create opportunities for knowledge exchange between cultural researchers, policy makers, managers and practitioners.  The project will also create a network of researchers with similar interests across the cultural research sector in Yorkshire and the North of England and create opportunities to explore cross university collaboration. It is hoped this will include different disciplinary perspectives and will result in a publication on participation and engagement in cultural activities, to be edited by Leila Jancovich and Franco Bianchini.
